I can't remember what you always used to do,
and that is
Puzzling
because once, I
reminded you every day.
"Remember when you used to--"
And you'd laugh
and nod
and play along.
It was a habit that made me smile,
Beaming across the ancient night.
But now your face
slips
from my fading mind
And your
name
dies on the tip of my tongue.
Still, you laugh
and nod
and play along
and I wonder if I'm even speaking at all.
A grin dances about your childhood face,
jolting through me
And how could I forget?

Seems like everyone else has the someone they need
And there's an odd number of people like me
But this can't be, because I believe in something better than love
Oh yeah, I know your pain on that, too.
